Pulmonary AVMs
Pulmonary arteriovenous malformation (PAVM) affect the blood flow between the heart and the lungs.
Affected people have an abnormal connection between a pulmonary artery and a pulmonary vein (carries blood from the lungs back to the heart). As a result, blood may not be properly oxygenated by the lungs.
Most people have no symptoms, but in severe cases like Alex, symptoms can include difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, difficultly exercising, and blue skin.
Treatment varies based on the severity of the condition and the associated signs and symptoms. It typically includes embolisation surgery, and addressing associated conditions, most commonly HHT.
